Buena Bands Staff

Dr. Duane Chun, Director.   Duane Chun is beginning his 17th year as a band director for the Sierra Vista Public Schools, presently teaching at Buena High School (BHS) and working as Assistant Manager for the Buena Performing Arts Center.  He is a 1981 graduate of BHS (a product of the Buena Bands) and an alumnus of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Music Education (1985).  His saxophone studies include work with Dr. Joseph Wytko, Arizona State University and Mr. Daniel Trembli, Saxophonist for Leonard Bernstein and Montclair State University. Dr. Chun holds a Master of Arts in Education, Administration and Supervision (1995) as well as an Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Phoenix (2008). His professional affiliations include membership in the Music Educators National Conference, Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association, International Jazz Educators, as well as lifetime membership to Kappa Kappa Psi and Modern Music Masters.

Prior to coming to teach at Buena, Dr. Chun was a high school band director for 7 years on the East Coast.  He is pleased to return to Sierra Vista to work alongside his former band directors -- Mr. Rick “Coach”  Klein) and “Mr. R” (Ron Rivera) -- as well as being able to give a little back to a school and community that had been, and continues to be, good to him.

Mr. Brad Gallant, Assistant Director. Mr. Brad Gallant had been a Special Education teacher and the Buena Bands percussion coach at Buena High School for the past four years, and assumed duties as Asssitant Director of the Buena Bands Program in July 2008.  Mr. Gallant started his musical career in Mesa AZ when he was nine playing the violin. He quickly moved to the cello, and then settled on the Alto saxophone.  He took up percussion when he was 14 due to a lack of drummers at his school.  So he put down the alto saxophone, picked up sticks and never looked back.  Playing in several small bands he supplemented his high school activities such as marching band, jazz band, and  orchestra.   Mr. Gallant is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor's degree in Music.  While in college he  expanded his repertoire with percussion ensembles, marching band, orchestra, brass choir, and various music courses. He studied with Gary Barrier and various graduate students. He was honored to attend various clinics with Chuck Silverman, Michael Spiro and Ignacio Berroa. After college Mr. Gallant moved to Cincinnati OH, where he explored his professional music performance career and taught private lessons, while also working in the music retail industry.  Through that work sprang an opportunity to host drum clinics and to work as the drum tech for the 2003 Midpoint Music Festival. In 2004 Mr. Gallant moved back to Arizona for more sun and to try new avenues of his professional life. That was when he discovered the Buena Marching Colts and jumped at the chance to bring his musical background to help influence the Buena Drumline, where he has been molding young percussionists for the past 4 years.   When presented with the opportunity to take over the assistant directorship of the bands program alongside Dr. Chun, he immediately took the position.   He is very grateful and fortunate to continue to work with the program in this new expanded capacity.
